The Editor

Want to write for The Times? The Editor is where stories are created and published.

Starting a Storyโ€‹

Open the Editor (or tap โœ๏ธ Edit on an existing article) to write. You can create a brand-new story or edit one that's already published.

A story has:

  • A headline and a slug (the web address, auto-generated from the title)
  • A section and an edition number
  • A byline and a publication date
  • A standfirst (the one-line summary)
  • The body, written in Markdown
  • An optional author's note that appears in the sidebar of the published article

A live preview on the side shows your formatted story as you type. When you're happy, hit publish and you're taken to the finished article.

Adding a Pollโ€‹

Below a published article, writers and editors can tap ๐Ÿ“Š Add a reader poll, set a question and a few options, and let readers vote. Results display live on the article.

Moderating Lettersโ€‹

Editors also handle letters to the editor from the Letters page โ€” approving or rejecting reader submissions for each story.
